About

I live in Wiltshire in England with my lovely (and long-suffering) partner and our cat. Over the years I have done many jobs, including frozen meat pie packer, theatre usher, bookshop worker, editorial assistant, and mostly archaeologist: after completing my BA Hons. degree in Archaeology and Anthropology I worked on digs in the Middle East for several years, for one of the UK’s largest archaeological units, for the National Trust as an Archaeologist/Warden, and as a freelancer. Now I am an archaeological researcher who only very occasionally does fieldwork (dodgy knees and even dodgier back means I can’t mattock and shovel like I used to), and a proofreader and copy editor, again mainly to do with archaeological publications.

I am very lucky that I was able to make one of my interests, gardening, into a part-time career. I have designed several gardens, one of which made it into The Yellow Book, and I worked as a freelance gardening journalist for a while, writing for The English Garden.

Another of my interests has spawned an Etsy shop. Even though I don’t wear jewellery myself, I have always been fascinated by sparkly things, and so I sell antique and vintage jewellery and other bits and bobs that catch my eye at my Etsy shop. Feel free to drop by.

I hope to add posts to this blog on a regular basis, and expect they will be on a rather odd mix of topics as I have some rather odd interests.

So welcome, and do have a poke about!

  1. My friend Patricia Jon from Etsy shared your website with me which is absolutely wonderful! I have a single NE From earring that is so beautiful. I was wondering if this is something you would be interested in sharing with your viewers in case someone is looking for the match. Its the lovely button earring with floral silver work and large amber cabochon in the middle.
    Thank you.

    • Hi Linda

Thanks for your comment. I’ve sent you an email about your earring – I have a feeling I know which design it is, and I was thinking of tackling that at some point too, so maybe I could include a little bit about your lonesome singleton too? Looking forward to hearing from you!

  2. Not sure if you can advise or how best to contact you. I came across ‘A Bletchley Park Regret’ July 2015? You mention the GOULD family and also Jonathan Betts Book about R T Gould. I have recently been researching H H M Gould, the brother of R T Gould, who died in 1915. I am hoping to find details for his WW1 Service. There is a photograph of his grave on the Charterhouse WW1 Roll of Honour. He does not appear on the CWGC database but I feel should possibly be considered for inclusion – I am a volunteer with the ‘In From The Cold Project’. I appreciate you may not be able to help but thank you for reading this. (Should you know of any family who might please feel free to forward my details.)

  3. I just wanted to say THANK YOU so very much for your exceptional posts on Jessie M King (https://www.inglenookery.com/?p=3671) I was lucky enough to find one of her pieces in a little local shop and had absolutely no idea what I had found until I saw its likeness on your blog. I knew it was a darling thing, but now I know just how super incredibly special it is!! I feel like I’ve had my own private “Antiques Roadshow” moment thanks to you 💙💜
    Best wishes from Australia,
    Aurelia

  4. I co-ordinate the One-Name Study for the surname Thew and am very impressed by the extent of your information on Mary Russell Thew (nee Frew). I am compiling information about her on a family tree on Ancestry and plan to write a Wikipedia page about her soon. Would it be OK if I include the line drawing of Mary Thew at her workbench in both? I will, of course, also include links to your site, plus further credit(s) for the owner/originator of the line drawing as appropriate.

  5. Hello,

Thank for your website and all the information you provide regarding the work of “Nefrom”.
I recently acquired a silver/gold mechanical woman watch with the marks you describe on your site : “N.E. From” in flowing handwriting-like script, with ‘925S STERLING DANMARK’ in capitals.
I have done some research and I haven’t been able to find photos or article about Nefrom watches.
Have you some elements you could share with me ?

    thank you !

  6. Today at a charity shop in the Netherlands I found a special looking brooch. I wanted to know more about it and ended up on your website. There I found your article on: The Viking bird pendant from Hattula, Finland. So great to get to know some history.
